Introduction
About Bible Society

More than 200 years ago, people who believed passionately that the Bible had something to say for the whole of humanity founded Bible Society. Today, we still share that vision. When we read the Bible we find out more about God, more about ourselves and more about the world. That's why we want to share it.

We invite people to discover the Bible's message for themselves, even if they've never thought the Bible was for them. We want them to read it, be excited by it and find their lives changed by it. We believe the Bible is God's gift to the world.

Our story began in Wales. In 1800, a 15-year-old girl named Mary Jones walked 26 miles through the rugged terrain of north Wales to buy a Welsh Bible from Revd Thomas Charles of Bala, having saved for six years to afford it. Her determination inspired our founders, who in 1804 asked a question that would change the world…if affordable Bibles for Wales, why not for the kingdom? And if for the kingdom, why not for the world?

What we do

We translate the Bible and make it accessible in people's heart languages. We bring it into public spaces where its voice can be heard. We tell its stories and encourage people to explore it for themselves.

Around the world

As part of the United Bible Societies fellowship, we are active in around 240 countries and regions. Through translation, publishing, distribution, engagement and advocacy programmes, we enable people to experience the Bible in their heart language. Our translation work makes the Bible available in new spoken and signed languages, our production facilities produce physical, visual, audio and digital forms, and our distribution network takes the Bible to places it might otherwise never reach. All our international work is informed by the Patmos World Bible Attitudes Survey, a major piece of research into attitudes to the Bible and faith around the world.

England and Wales

In many parts of the world, the key barrier to people engaging with the Bible is availability. At home, it's simply that many people don't think the Bible is relevant to them. We are determined to change that. We are developing resources that help local churches engage more deeply with Scripture, sending thousands of volunteers into primary schools through Open the Book to share Bible stories with a generation almost entirely unfamiliar with them, and bringing the Bible to life in politics, the media and the arts in fresh, exciting and relevant ways; including through Theos, the faith and society think tank, and creative projects such as The Climb documentary series. Bible Society has its roots in Wales, and we maintain a distinctive range of activities and resources in Wales and the Welsh language.

Our leadership

Bible Society is led by a team of people from different backgrounds and church traditions, united by a belief that the Bible is for everyone. The Chief Executive is Paul Williams, and you can read more about the whole Leadership Team and Board of Trustees on the Bible Society website here. Our President is His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos, Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London, and our Patron is His Majesty King Charles III.
